Hoover Dam – Boulder City, Nevada

There isn’t a holiday season where National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation doesn’t air on a loop. In the movie, there is a short scene when the Griswold’s go on the “Dam” tour, top that off with the social media posts of water flowing upwards when poured over the edge of the dam, you know I had to see it for myself.

About the Hoover Dam:

Hoover Dam is a large concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River, sitting on the border of Nevada and Arizona. Completed in 1936 during the Great Depression, it was one of the biggest engineering projects of its time. The dam created Lake Mead, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States.

The structure helps control floods, stores water for agriculture and cities, and generates hydroelectric power for the Southwest. Its turbines convert the river’s flow into electricity used across Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam remains a major example of 20th-century engineering and a key part of the region’s water and power system.
